法国大革命，法国特定历史时期，是1789年在法国爆发的革命，统治法国多个世纪的君主制在三年内土崩瓦解。法国在这段时期经历着一个史诗式的转变：过往的贵族和宗教特权不断受到自由主义政治组织及上街抗议的民众的冲击，旧的观念逐渐被全新的天赋人权、三权分立等的民主思想所取代。从钱币的正面的大力神海格力斯和手持“自由杆”的自由女神与手提天平的公平女神可以体现出诞生的历史背景。[1]

正中的大力神

大力神（赫拉克勒斯Heracles）是希腊神话中最伟大的英雄，又名海格力斯，相当于罗马神话中的赫丘利（Hercules）。

他是宙斯与凡人阿尔克墨涅的私生子，出生后即为天后赫拉所仇视，但在雅典娜的巧妙安排下，赫拉为其哺过乳。这位半人半神的英雄，出生后即力大无穷，曾于摇篮中捏死过两条天后赫拉派来谋杀他的巨毒蛇。成人后，在他游历期间，他完成了杀死九头蛇、捕捉狂暴的公牛、拯救受难的普罗米修斯、参加阿尔果斯远征帮助伊阿宋觅取金羊毛等12项任务。因为他神勇无比，死后被升为武仙座，成为大力神。

在这12项任务中，有一项体现了他过人的智慧。在伊利斯城邦，国王和赫拉克勒斯打赌，只要能够在一天之内清扫完300个牛棚，便给他丰厚的奖赏。这个看似无法完成的任务，却被赫拉克勒斯轻松完成了。他拆掉牛棚围栏，引来河水冲洗以后，再把围栏安好，完成了任务。国王却变卦不愿意兑现诺言，赫拉克勒斯一怒之下赶走了国王。

因在完成十二件大功中替人类扫除了众多妖魔怪兽，并解放了为宙斯囚禁的善神普罗米修斯，他深受人们爱戴。在他的一生中，他与天地、魔兽、人类进行了无数斗争，曾不满宙斯的专制而反抗神界，因此他是反抗精神的代表。

1789年在法国爆发资产阶级革命，即法国大革命。统治法国多个世纪的君主制封建制度在三年内土崩瓦解。而大力神这个富有反抗精神的神祗，作为革命代言人是最恰当的。因此大力神从此登上银币的舞台也就不奇怪了。

左边的智慧女神雅典娜

智慧女神位于币面的左边、大力神的右侧。智慧女神的左手和正义女神相牵，右手则拿着“自由杆”。

智慧女神的罗马名叫弥涅尔瓦（Minerva），她有个大家更熟悉的希腊名字：雅典娜(Athena）。雅典娜是三大处女神之一。相传她诞生于宙斯的颅骨之内，一出生便有过人的力量和超群的智慧。她的天生神力甚至连宙斯也颇为忌惮，因此也是新一辈神祉中唯一不受宙斯统辖的天神。雅典娜手持战矛，倚靠宙斯盾的威武形象一直以来被视为自由与独立的象征。

智慧女神雅典娜的右手所持名为“自由杆”。自由之竿是在美国革命和法国大革命时期的一种象征自由和解放的标志，其形态是一根直立于地面的很高的木杆，竿的顶端悬挂着旗帜或自由帽。自由之竿常竖立在城镇的广场上。当竿上的旗帜（通常是红色）升起来后，被称为自由之子的公民聚集在自由之竿下，发表政见。自由之竿作为一种符号，象征着自由、解放和独立。

在自由杆上挂着的帽子是弗吉利亚无边便帽，又被称为“自由帽”。 这种帽子是一种与头部紧密贴合的圆锥形的软帽，其帽尖向前弯曲，典型的颜色是红色。古代小亚细亚的弗吉利亚人曾经佩戴这种帽子。为什么称为自由帽？16和17世纪的欧洲流行一种说法，在古希腊和古罗马，获释的奴隶会佩戴弗里吉亚帽，弗里吉亚帽因此与自由和解放联系起来，被称为“自由帽”。
