全国大赛讲的是湘北以县大赛第二的名次取得进军全国的资格后，与丰玉以及山王两强队比赛的事。

全国大赛非常经典，有以下几个画面让SD迷津津乐道：

一，湘北在打丰玉时，流川被南烈使卑鄙手段打伤眼睛，结果樱木发飚想为流川出头，这是樱木第一次显出关心流川的表情。

二，湘北打赢丰玉后，又接着打山王这个强强队，流川于是遇到了一个叫泽北的天才强敌，在屡战屡败的情形下，流川第一次微勾起唇角（这就是惊世骇俗的流川式微笑）同时流川宣称，我要去美国！（旁边的樱木嚷着也要去）

三，打山王最后时刻，樱木为了救球，导致脊背受伤，但是，在流川的激励之下，樱木忍痛继续打篮球，并且和流川如有灵犀合作无间，一边老爹号称看到两超越谷泽的天才。樱木发现自己完全喜欢上篮球。

四，湘北险胜山王，尘埃落定时刻，樱木流川那次击掌被热血SD迷引为经典美谈。

湘北由于元气大伤终于在嬴山王工业之后败于爱和学院手上。

最后的剧情是，樱木在湘北海岸的疗养院疗养，当他在海边开心开着晴子**的信时，流川沿着海远远跑到他面前，拉开外套给樱木看里面那件日本青年队的队服，又成功把樱木气得跳脚，然后两人一起面对大海蓝天。这时疗养院阿姨出来叫樱木做康复练习，樱木信心十足说道，我是天才！-----剧终！
