画家们并不都使用调色板。点彩派画家修拉用锡盖代替调色板；毕加索在报纸上调色。另外，用玻璃作调色板有两大优点：一是为防止未用完的颜料干燥结皮，用完后可将玻璃板浸入水中存放。二是可根据画面的底色更换玻璃板下的衬托物（白纸、灰色纸或亚麻布等）。但玻璃板必须摆放于平整而稳固的支撑物上。
