荷东的全称是 Hollywood East Star Trax东方好莱坞明星舞会。香港译荷里活东方明星舞会简称“荷东”。荷东的发源地在香港，其实是香港的一家 Disco 舞厅的名称。当时全球兴起了一种新的舞曲元素EUROBEAT，这家Disco舞厅的DJ们后来更创意地利用当时一些极其流行的EUROBEAT DISCO歌曲重新Remi，并推出专辑，结果疯魔了整个东南亚，获得空前成功。

荷东音乐有广义和狭义之分：狭义的荷东音乐就是香港飞时唱片公司和广州中国唱片公司出版的二十张专集中的音乐。广义的荷东音乐是包括《荷东》《猛士》《家庭舞王》《东方节奏》《飞时皇牌迪斯科》《新派飞时舞王》等系列中的所有欧洲舞曲音乐。也就是说，广义的荷东音乐是所有Italo Disco音乐或EUROBEAT音乐的代名词。
