赠别一诗作于杜牧30几岁的时候。那时的杜牧非常落寞，也非常潦倒，就在此时他结识了一位13岁的青楼女子，后来杜牧要奔赴前程之时，还对这名青楼女子十分不舍。便作此诗以抒情怀。里面的“豆蔻”就用来表示还没长成的少女，所以“豆蔻少女”的典故，就是从此诗中来的。而且据考证《赠别》一诗中的“豆蔻”应该是当时的一种红豆蔻，因为那种豆蔻含苞待放的样子才真正符合一名少女含羞的样子。
